Just getting into mainland China is difficult. Depending on your passport and desired length of stay, even  the visa process can be enough to put you off.

Now there are transit visa’s that give you a free 5 day visit, and 15 day visas are available for more and more countries now.

Electronic payment systems, VPNs to set up, mass local tourism, zero English… it does present challenges that you will not face elsewhere.

Worth the hassle? Absolutely. Exhausted by the end of it? Definitely.

Hong Kong is very different world. My favourite city, and the place I have called home for four years. Here you use Google, can use foreign cards and English is widely spoken.  As a Brit, Hong Kong feels quite familiar in a lot of ways. The hiking, beaches and nature were a complete surprise to me –  hopefully these guides help to show you my favourite places!
