about me
Nice to meet you
I am Hollie, from the north of England.
I had always wanted to travel but put it down to something ‘other people did’,. People who could afford it, people with a sense of adventure and, well, no real job.
Eventually, at 27 years old I decided my 20s was passing me by at lightening speed and I had nothing to show for it. I decided to move out of my lovely flat over-looking the river in the city centre and spent the next 12 months saving and selling everything before leaving for 20 months in Latin America.
This trip was nothing short of life changing. Living out of a backpack and a tent, getting lost on mountains, sleeping under star-lit beach skies, haggling in colourful markets and exchanging stories with eccentric locals. Budget backpacking is responsible for changing my life, and me as a person, for the better.
The original plan of making it to Mexico was cut short due to the pandemic, and I ended up in Hong Kong where I have spent the past 4 years travelling Asia on shorter trips and making a life for myself. Although living in Hong Kong was completely by accident, it is now my favourite city and the place I call home.
But.
Now the world is calling me again.
So, why do I want to leave my life I have made in my 30s, leave my favourite city?
Because, simply, nothing makes me happier. Nothing has the ability to stir that excitement, that lust for life.
Because, Travel is not visiting a country only for the instagram photos or the ‘best bits’, it is about living and breathing a new country.
And, most importantly –
Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone, past what you believed you were EVER capable of, learning to trust yourself and your instincts, is life changing. That place, at that time, was yours.
To other women over 30 wanting to travel alone –
You are never too old.
The world is not some unsafe place out to get out you.
The kindness of strangers absolutely exists.
Travel the world and show yourself exactly what you are capabale of. I promise it will change your life.
Travel philosophy - what i remind myself of on every trip.
- You do not need to travel to some remote tropical location to get the feeling that travel can give you. Exploring your own country or city, anything that takes you out of the safety of daily monotony.
- I am lucky to have the money to buy plane tickets, food and acommadation.
- I am lucky to have a healthy body to take me on these adventures.
- You do not need to see everything
- Slow travel is best. See one place well over seeing two places rushed.
- Have respect for this earth. We only have one and she is beautiful.
- Everywhere can have dangers, annoying people and disappointments.
- Be present and grateful for in the place you are in. Do not wish you were somewhere warmer or somewhere you had seen instagram.
- Nobody back home will really care about the things you have seen, people you met or the things that you did.
